Studies like this are exceedingly rare. Almost all projects of this kind fall apart within a decade because too many people drop out of the study, or funding for the research dries up, or the researchers get distracted, or they die, and nobody moves the ball further down the field.

で「このような研究調査は非常に珍しいのです。この種のプロジェクトのほとんどが10年以内に頓挫してしまいます。あまりにも多くの人が研究から手を引いたり、研究の資金が尽きたり、はたまた研究者たちが他のことで忙しくなったり、亡くなったりして、誰も研究を進める人がいなくなってしまうのです。」という意味になります。

Studies like this are exceedingly rare. で「このような研究調査は非常に珍しい」となります。
studies like this とは前出の75年も続いている The Harvard Study of Adult Development などのことです。
exceedingly は「非常に、ことのほか」という意味の副詞です。
動詞形 exceed イク[スィ]ードゥで「～を超える、超越する、上回る」です。英和辞書の名前でおなじみですね。

Almost all projects of this kind で「この種のプロジェクトのほとんどすべて」です。
almost all ～ で「ほとんどすべての～、9割がたの」という意味の言い回しです。
projects of this kind で「この種のプロジェクト」
～ of this kind で「この種の～」です。前出の ～ like this と同じ意味合いです。

fall apart で「ばらばらに崩れ落ちる、崩壊する、瓦解する、失敗に終わる」です。
fall が「落ちる、崩れ落ちる、倒れる」で、apart で「離れて、ばらばらに」という意味です。
within a decade で「10年以内に」です。
within ～ で「～以内に」という意味の前置詞です。
例：within 2 minutes「２分以内に」

because ～「なぜなら～だから」という意味の接続詞です。

too many people drop out of the study, で「あまりにも多くの人がその研究から脱退する（から）」です。
drop out of ～ で「～から脱退する、～から中退する、～から手を引く」という意味です。
drop は「落ちる」ですが、ここでは「脱落する、これ落ちる」などという意味です。
例：drop out of a race「レースを放棄する、レースから降りる」

or funding for the research dries up, で「または、研究のための資金が、枯渇する」です。
dry up は「枯渇する、尽きる、なくなる」です。
例：Soon oil reserves will dry up「石油はすぐに枯渇するだろう」

or the researchers get distracted, で「または、その研究者たちは、集中できなくなる」です。
get distracted で「気が散る、集中できなくなる」です。
数十年の長期にわたる研究なので、いろいろあってその研究だけに集中できなくなってしまう、といういことですね。
or they die,「または彼らはしんだり」です。
they は the researchers を指します。

and nobody moves the ball further down the field. で「それで、誰も、研究を前に進める人がいなくなる」です。
move (or push) the ball down the field は決まり文句的に「ゴールに向かってプロジェクトなどを進める」という意味です。
サッカーやフットボールをイメージするとピンときます。
ボールを（ゴールに向かって）フィールドのさらに向こうに動かす（進める）です。
down には「（自分から見て）～を前に進んで、進んで行って」という意味があります。
例：Go down the street.「この道をまっすぐ行って下さい。」、waddle down a hallway「廊下をよたよた進む」
※上記の例では別に下り坂があるわけではありません。
